Volcan Poas and Environs

The day after Jaco, May booked all of us on a tour of the Volcan Poas region. We saw a coffee plantation, a zoo, the La Paz Waterfalls, and of course the volcano. The most recent eruption was in March of 2006, and before that, 2004. Sounds like the 2008 eruption is overdue! Despite a suspicious sulfuric aroma, steam was the only emission we saw.

I hate to see monkeys in cages, but Silas loved the monkeys and the monkeys really loved Silas. In this first photo, Silas grabbed the cage and, in the blink of an eye, a Tamarin made ET-like contact with Silas's fingers. I won't win any parenting awards for taking this picture rather than protecting my son, but no harm was done.

In the second photo, a Capuchin snuck its tail out of the cage and tickled Silas for several minutes, much to Silas's delight. As Meredith and Silas walked around the exhibit, the Capuchin followed us the whole way, flirting with Silas shamelessly.

We hiked a half mile down a rickety, wet staircase set into the riverside hills, following the park's five waterfalls (named, for those of you in a poetic mood, Templo, Magia Blanca (pictured here), Encantada, Escondida, and La Paz). The falls varied in height, but each is roughly 100 feet tall.

I can't believe you let those filthy monkeys touch your child. Don't you know how monkeys fight? And don't get me started on that prehensile bacteria magnet...
