The Year in Review

Outtakes from 2009 (or: Why it's hard to film Silas). Happy New Year!

Last year at this time we provided a somewhat lengthy update on Silas; here's another. Meredith and I have put together a list of Silas's new interests:

* Singing: Silas suddenly loves to sing. We think he's been partly inspired by Wednesday toddler groups at the library and partly by watching this video repeatedly. Silas's repertoire consists of fractured versions of "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star," "Frere Jacques," "Old MacDonald" (who never has anything but "a chicken"), and "Wheels on the Bus"; and he can sing the alphabet song in its entirety.

* Counting: Silas's counting goes like this: "Onetwothreefourfive... SEVEN! EIGHT! NINE! TEN!" Silas doesn't do six.

* Crying: Silas is deeply fascinated by other people crying. If another child is crying, Silas will drop whatever he is doing and stare, or even walk over to get a really close look. Sometimes we will get a report: "Mama, Dada, that boy is crying." His favorite page of any children's book is the page where the main character starts crying. (It's somewhat surprising how many tears there are in children's books.) Often we will be four pages beyond the crying scene, and Silas will flip backward and announce, e.g., "Yoko is crying." "Trixie is crying." "The Ugly Pumpkin is crying."

* Bossing: Want to get ordered around? Come to our apartment. "Dada: Sit down!" "Mama: Run!" "Dada: Cry!" (Once you start crying, he will bring you a toy, or give you a hug.) Although we wouldn't want Silas to become a bossy person, we surely encourage this behavior by faithfully executing pretty much all of his orders.

Thanks for following Silas in life and on the blog this past year. Hope to see you in 2010!

Best post ever. LOVED it. Fave part:

S: [a little whiny] "I want to see you."

T: "You want to see yourself?"

S: "I want to see de self."

Cyrus and I were watching old videos this morning. We decided to take a spin through Silas's blog, and re-watched your year-end wrap up. I don't remember reading all the things Silas was doing at the end of last year, including with the singing link to our blog! I know I'm the mom, but I haven't watched that video in several months and it made me laugh all over again. You should hear Charlottr & Cyrus try to hit the high notes in Danny Boy.
